Research Assistant, PhD, Center for Molecular Prediction of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (PREDICT), Aalborg University, Copenhagen, Denmark

In this MEDtalk, Marie Vibeke Vestergaard, Research Assistant and PhD candidate at PREDICT, presents a nationwide Danish study investigating the association between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and other immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs). Using a full-population pedigree, the study quantifies sibling risk patterns and shows distinct association profiles for Crohn’s disease versus ulcerative colitis. For psoriasis, the overlap appears driven by shared genetics rather than the microbiome, whereas for multiple sclerosis the data suggest a stronger environmental contribution. The study is based on the Danish national IBD data.
