Teresa Macarulla
Dr. Teresa Macarulla, as the Head of the Medical Oncology Department at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, dedicates her professional journey to the clinical and translational investigation of hepatobiliopancreatic tumors. As the Principal Investigator for Phase I, II, and III clinical studies, she actively shapes trial designs within national and international cooperative groups and pharmaceutical-sponsored initiatives. Driven by a specific focus on developing molecular target therapies and defining optimal biological doses, her work has yielded numerous high profile publications and regulatory approvals from bodies such as the FDA and EMA.
Presently, Dr. Macarulla leads a dynamic, multidisciplinary team at the forefront of cancer research, seamlessly integrating clinical expertise with cutting-edge translational approaches to enhance patient care and survival. The team strategically combines clinical and biomarker research breakthroughs, conducting innovative studies on drug effectiveness for tailored treatment approaches in upper GI cancers.
Dr. Macarulla’s extensive research portfolio spans diverse areas, including the design and development of investigator-initiated clinical trials, participation in collaborative research programs, coordination of late-stage clinical studies, molecular characterization of biliary tract and pancreatic tumors, implementation of liquid biopsy for disease monitoring, and the discovery and validation of novel prognostic and predictive biomarkers for pancreatic and biliary tract tumors.
Her leadership extends globally as the Associate Editor of ESMO Gastrointestinal Oncology, co-chair of the ESMO Gastrointestinal Cancers Congress, and contributor to SEOM guidelines, solidifying her status as an internationally renowned clinical researcher with over 160 peer-reviewed publications.
